My name is Ashley Edwards. I call Montgomery, Alabama home. I started the Writing Lifeline because I love the craft of writing and I think all folks should be able to feel confident about the words they write. I believe writing is one of the most important tools we have for telling our stories.

I attended Auburn University for my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. During my time at Auburn, I spent 3 years as a Lead Writing Consultant in the Miller Writing Center on Auburn's campus. I worked with students who were English Language Learners, people working on their dissertations, and individuals who may not have learned how to write well in grade school. In that role, I learned how to personalize writing instruction for each individual and to prioritize making each writer feel safe and understood.

For the past ten years, I have worked as a social worker with a variety of different populations, including families with young children and people who are incarcerated and awaiting trial. I write every day in some capacity. Social workers have a saying: “If you didn’t document it, it didn’t happen!” Being able to express yourself through written word is important, even outside of school.

Writing can feel challenging when we don’t have frequent opportunities to practice or another person to help us catch the mistakes we miss. Too often, we stifle ourselves and our voices go unheard because we are afraid of writing “the wrong way” or saying “the wrong thing.” I believe in working with you, no matter the written project, to make sure your unique voice is clear and the writing feels true to you. Your voice deserves to be heard.

Whether you need help with a one-time writing task or want to strengthen your writing skills overall, I am here.

“You don’t start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it’s good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That’s why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.”
